I love the interpretation that because in ep4 the story came from Claudia’s diary that we saw a truer version of Louis and Lestat’s relationship! I remember being a bit baffled that Louis and Lestat’s relationship seemed to improve a bit in ep4. The circumstance of Claudia’s transformation was just not what would help. Claudia herself also kept causing problems. At the time I thought maybe Claudia just had a more optimistic view of their interactions, or that Louis did try to make Lestat and him appear happy and healthy in front of her XD
I think Louis’s parenting issue (despite he’s the one who forced Claudia into the family) and his using Lestat as a scapegoat definitely contributed to my taking Lestat’s side even after he dropped Louis from the sky… kind of like, he keeps blaming Lestat for their relationship failure and Claudia’s leaving, and now Lestat actually crossed a line so people (the imaginary audience in my head) won’t fault him for painting Lestat a monster. How convenient. Very petty, I know 😂
There’s also that Lestat seemed to be the only one who worked to make the relationship work most of the time. Making compromises or planning entertainments. His methods may not be right but he was trying. I’m probably too forgiving of him compared to other characters, but I’m sometimes not sure how to judge his actions. He was a vampire for a long time and he operates in a different moral framework. Physical ability too. So when he started that big fight with Louis, and dropped Louis from the sky, while I did wince at the gruesomeness, I couldn’t help but wonder how bad that really was in vampire relationships, how much damage would Louis actually get being thrown from the sky. If Louis wasn’t as weak or as new a vampire, would it be that bad? It’s not straightforward to me, so I didn’t have the immediate emotional response to want to criticize him.
